  • Spring Sabbatical 2010/Sicily

Here are my observations from our spring sabbatical 2010…18days in Sicily.

Best thing I ate:  Busiate with trapanese pesto at Cantina Siciliana in Trapani.  Nothing like the pesto genovese that we are accustomed to.  Here’s an explanation/recipe if you’d like to try it out.

Second best thing I ate:  Blood orange granita at Caffe Sicilia in Noto.  Cafe Sicilia is the type of place that is highly noted in the foodie world, that sometimes disappoint in real life.  But not this.

Best all-round:  Pasta alla Norma. OMG.. why isn’t this widely available here in the states?

Honorable Mention: Caponata and Ricotta Fresca.

Biggest Surprise:  the Interior Landscape/Mountains of Sicily.  I thought all the glory was in the coastline/ islands.  I was wrong.

Biggest Impression:  The top honor, however, must go to the Sicilian People.  I had always heard that people were more friendly in the south (of Italy) and always dismissed it as hyperbole until I met this bunch.  They are very friendly.  And hospitable.  And passionate.  And distinctive.  And they drive like maniacs.

I’ll link to more of the images when they are available.
